BGS: your specialist for beta and gamma radiation
BGS works with various electron accelerators and one gamma ray plant. The special know-how of our employees consists in combining mastery of the complex technology with an ability to apply it flexibly in order to meet customers’ individual needs.
The radiation plants are constructed and maintained by BGS’s own specialists. Naturally, they fulfil all legal specifications regarding safety at work and radiation protection. In recognition of our responsibility to our employees and the environment, and the care of the products we treat, safety systems at BGS are constantly further developed.
The irradiation process is exactly reproducible: every order is precisely recorded and documented via the electrical parameters. BGS has defined the product treatment systems, including documentation of the process parameters – these make our services completely traceable.
At all our sites electron beams (beta rays) are used. In Wiehl we also work with gamma rays. The main difference between beta and gamma rays is their differing material penetration capabilities and dose rates:
Beta radiation:
high dose rate and limited penetration depthGamma rays:
high penetrative capability at relatively low dose rate
It is the dose rate, i.e. the radiation energy absorbed per mass, which is the main determinant in changing the properties of the irradiated product. The main areas of application of the irradiation technique are radiation crosslinking for the optimization of plastics and the sterilization of many products used in everyday life. There are also numerous special applications in various different fields.
